Academy believes each child is a unique individual, infinitely valuable
because he/she is made in the image of, and valued by God.
All children have unlimited God given potential when given the
opportunity and specific stimulation. Learning is dependent upon the level of
efficiency and organization of the central nervous system.
Just like academics the brain develops in an
orderly, sequential manner; one level building upon the next. When the
foundation is shaky or dysorganized the upper levels (cortex) will struggle to
learn, focus or sit still, follow directions, understand consequences and social
cues. The brain has two hemispheres each with four sensory (sensation, visual,
auditory and emotional) and four motor (use of hands, feet, language, and
social) channels. Its function is to: receive, process, store and use
information from its environment. The brain processes information in the
condition received from the sensory channel.
Each student has a daily body/brain workout.
Some students haven’t established a dominant side of the brain so we need to
retrain the brain’s secretary, some have poor short term memory, some need
visual and/or auditory processing skills strengthened, some missed primitive or
postural reflexes which are foundations for all motor skills and some just don’t
know what to do with sensory information. We help students reorganize their
brain so learning, behaving, attending and social skills become easier.

Academy doesn’t use specific grade levels but rather lower elementary (grades
K-3), upper elementary (grades 4-6), Jr. High (7-8) and High School (9-12).
Each level is limited to not more then eight to ten students. Accelerated
students are able to participate in a higher class subject. In the event more
then ten students register for a level they will be on a waiting list
To mark the end of the school year students are
promoted. Promotion isn’t based on academic grades the student advances to the
next sequential skill level after mastery. A yearly ‘right of passage’
celebration will end the school year. Graduation will formally be recognized in
sixth, eighth and twelfth grades.
The CAN LEARN Philosophy implies—
-
Human development is on a continuum of function ranging from a low of coma to
a high of genius. All humans are on this continuum.
All
children have unlimited potential
when given the opportunity and specific stimulation.
-
Each individual is perceived and provided with opportunities based on a
perception of unlimited potential
-
Lack of function or development is not
perceived as a lack of potential
-
Function provides a mirror from which the level of development may be
evaluated and
-
The development of the system follows an orderly sequence.
-
Plasticity—the
brain’s ability to assume the
function for a hurt or non-functioning area and to modify or reorganize its
structure and performance in response to its environment.
-
Branching affect--
The brain can make new dendrites (connections) to ‘detour’ completely
around a hurt or non-functioning area, even crossing hemispheres.
-
The brain (CNS) will only change with
specific stimulation
in a consistent frequency, intensity and duration. Frequency means how often
the stimulation must occur. Intensity refers to the fun stimulation itself;
and, Duration refers to number of minutes the stimulation is done.
-
Specific stimulation increases the number of
connections within the brain; and, as they increase so does
efficiency and organization improving function and development. The brain
doesn’t stop developing new neurons as once believed.
-
When children with developmental or learning struggles are given the
opportunity and specific stimulation will, in most cases,
reach their fullest potential
to lead a happy and productive future.
-
When the brain receives enough input, it will
give the output

The most credible experts of any child are
their parents.
